From a young age, growing up in Folkestone, southern England, I knew that a career in the language industry was my calling. This passion was ignited by my exceptional German teacher, Mrs. Pritchard, at Harvey Grammar School. Her teachings highlighted the power of multilingual proficiency to open doors in both professional and social spheres, instilling in me an international mindset that I believe was present even before my formal language studies.
My family's diverse experiences, especially my grandparents' work across several African countries and later for UNESCO, enriched my childhood with stories of global adventures. These tales kindled my fascination with cultures far beyond England, particularly those of Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, and Spain. This fascination led me to learn Portuguese and Spanish, beginning with intensive study in Lisbon and an enriching year teaching English in Monte Mor, Brazil. This experience deepened my love for Brazilian culture and fluency in Portuguese.
Pursuing my passion academically, I enrolled in the Bachelor of Portuguese and Spanish degree at the University of Salford, known for its excellent translation and interpreting programs. My undergraduate highlights included translation modules, an Erasmus year in Portugal and Spain, an internship at the Portuguese Consulate General in Manchester, and first-class honors, capped by the Audrey Brassloff Prize for excellence in Portuguese studies.
Determined to translate professionally, I pursued a Master of Translation and Language Services at the University of Porto. This program provided comprehensive immersion and specialized training from leading academics in translation and linguistics. My early ventures into medical, legal, and technical translation during this period laid a solid foundation for my career. I also gained practical experience as a Project Manager at a translation agency while completing my thesis.
Since going fully freelance in Portugal post-graduation, my translation career has flourished. In 2023 alone, I translated approximately 1 million words into English from Portuguese and Spanish, with significant experience in machine translation post-editing (MTPE).
Outside of my professional life, I am an avid reader with a penchant for historical fiction, postmodernist literature, and high fantasy, alongside non-fiction interests in history and sociology. My passion for history, especially the Middle Ages, fuels my travels across historical sites in Portugal, Spain, the UK, and beyond. Additionally, I am a dedicated music enthusiast, attending concerts across genres like metal, rock, classical, and ambient music, and have amassed a sizable vinyl collection. My other hobbies include cooking, gastronomy, homebrewing beer, and enjoying country walks.
With a robust background in communication and marketing, my translations are not only accurate but culturally resonant, enhancing engagement and effectiveness for my diverse clientele. My expertise ensures optimized visibility in multilingual SEO, making me a trusted partner for clients seeking impactful and authentic translations.
